FO: Laura

I made this pattern was because I wanted to try sideways construction. The advantage of sideways construction is that you can use up your yarn and the chance running out of yarn is almost zero. The process of designing this pattern was very fast and everything fell to place nicely. The process to write the pattern was not so smooth. Surprisingly, for such a simple and repetitive pattern, it took so much time and efforts to write and draw. Sometimes I was wondering whether it is worth the efforts.

I have these 2 skeins of yarns in Aged Wine colorway for ages. I was planning them for something else, but halfway through, I didn't like the result. So, I frogged it and planned for something else. Laura seems a perfect pattern for this yarn and colorway. Plus I have a perfect beads for it.

I planned to make the medium size, because I originally thought that 2 skeins should be enough. However, after I did part A and did some quick calculation, I found out that 2 skeins were not enough to make the medium size. So, in the end I made the small size with additional repeats of part D (total 4 times) to maximize the yarn usage.

During the making of this shawl, I was not sure whether it would look nice, and whether I should continue making it. After blocking however, the ugly ducking became a gorgeous swan. I love it. The beads adding the glamour and sparkle and now this shawl is my favorite one to use.

Saltire Crocheted Shawl Pattern for Sale

A saltire is a heraldic symbol in the form of a diagonal cross ☓ or letter x. I named this shawl Saltire because you can find a lot of x-stitches all over the shawl.
Saltire is a half circle-ish shaped shawl with interesting construction. You can make this shawl with 1 color or 2 colors. Both give you stunning results.
Instructions come in 2 sizes, small and large, but you can adjust the size. As with all my other patterns, this pattern comes with row-by-row written direction in US crochet term and charts.

Technical Editor: Chaitanya Muralidhara

Suggested yarn and yardage needed: Any sock yarn (920 - 1,600 yards)
You need at least 2 skeins of yarn to do a small size shawl (if you are not a tight crocheter like me, most likely you will need 3 skeins) and 4 skeins to make the large one.
For 2 color shawl, you need equal amounts of each color.
Note: I used Rendezvous Forever Sock 2 skeins (200g, 920 yards) for small size and 4 skeins for large size.

Finished Size:
Small: 90cm/35” wide by 45cm/17.7” deep
Large: 120cm/47.25" wide by 52cm/20.5" deep

Hook: 4.50 mm (US G) for Part A, B, C and 5.00 mm (US H) for part D. Adjust hook size accordingly if you use thinner/thicker yarn.

FO: Saltire in 3 Different Style.

Its time to reveal the FO of Saltire Mystery KAL that started last May.
The first sample that I made out of this pattern is using single color yarn. To tell you the truth I am not fond of using multiple color yarn. For me it's troublesome and distract the beauty of the pattern. So, when I started designing this pattern, I was using 1 color. Here is the result:

Pattern: Saltire
Materials: Rendezvous Forever Sock Yarn 75% Merino Superwash/25% Nylon (Lavender color)
Qty: 2 x 100 gram (920 yards total)
Hook: 4.5 mm
Start-Finish Date: 19 January - 9 March 2012
Finished size: 90cm/35" wide by 33cm/13" deep
Note: I didn't do part C (I only added this part later) and I still have about 30 gram leftover

Yes, it took almost 2 months to design this piece. It's because, I normally draw the chart and crochet at the same time. I like to do it in this manner because I will remember what have I done and how to do it once I done with the project. It's less overwhelming this way.

I was ready to launch this pattern as Mystery CAL, just need a bit of editing, then suddenly I got this request in the forum.

This got me to think. Like I said in the reply, I was too lazy to design colorwork crochet since I am not fond of it. However, probably the current one that I was ready to launch might look good using 2 colors yarn.

So, I had to postpone the launching, and crochet another sample using 2 colors. Choosing the colors gave me a headache. After 3 days of research, I finally choose mustard and lavender color for my sample. I choose these colors because these are the color that were available in my stash and looked good when I made a swatch. There are other color combination that looked promising, but didn't look good when I swatched. After almost 2 weeks crocheting this piece, I was really happy with the result. However, my other half not happy with the color. He said the colors was dull and not very lively, although I think this color gave a vintage feels.
I like how the color intertwine to each other on the neckband, and because of that I added another thin band before the edging using the same stitch pattern as the neckband.

Pattern: Saltire
Materials: Rendezvous Forever Sock Yarn 75% Merino Superwash/25% Nylon (Mustard and Lavender color)
Qty: 1 x 100 gram (460 yards) Mustard and 1 x 100 gram (460 yards) Lavender
Hook: 4.5 mm and 5.00 mm
Start-Finish Date: 12 March - 24 March 2012
Finished size: 90cm/35" wide by 45cm/17.7" deep
Note: I have very little leftover, and if you crochet not as tight as me, I suggest to have more yarn.

I did some research again, and in the end settled with yellow and grey combination. This time I did large size.

Pattern: Saltire
Materials: Rendezvous Forever Sock Yarn 75% Merino Superwash/25% Nylon (Mustard and Lavender color)
Qty: 2 x 100 gram (920 yards) Mustard and 1 x 100 gram (920 yards) Lavender
Hook: 4.5 mm and 5.00 mm
Start-Finish Date: 10 April - 29 April 2012
Finished size: 120cm/47.25" wide by 52cm/20.5" deep.
Note: I have plenty of yarn left. About 40 gram of each color.

So, which one you like the best? As for me I love the last one, because I simply love big shawl.

Gathering Leaves Shawl Using Only 1 Skein of Sock Yarn

A few months back, somebody emailed me to ask whether it is possible to make a small version of Gathering Leaves shawl. I told her that she can skip rows 10 - 39 to make it smaller but I was not sure how it would look like. At that time, I wanted to try myself to see whether the shawl still look nice skipping so many rows, however, I didn't have time to do it.

Last month, after I have done writing pattern for Saltire, I have some free time before starting another design. So, I decided to grab some yarn and make a smaller version of Gathering Leaves. To make it more challenging, I want to make this pattern using only 1 skein of sock yarn.

Fiori was having chicken pox and had to be quarantine in the room. She wanted me to accompany her all the time and didn't let me get out of the room. She let me crochet but she made sure that I didn't leave the room. So, I got plenty of crochet time and managed to finished the shawl in 2 days.

So without further ado, here is the result:

I managed to used up only 1 skein of Rendezvous Forever Sock in Sour colorway, but I had to crochet it very very very tight using 3.5 mm hook.

Pattern: Gathering Leaves
Source: Here
Materials: Rendezvous Forever Sock Yarn 75% Merino Superwash/25% Nylon (Sour color)
Qty: 1 x 100 gram (460 yards)
Needles: 3.5 mm
Start-Finish Date: 14 - 15 May 2012
Finished size: 44.5" wide by 21.25" deep
Yarn Usage:
Row 1 - 40 = used 6 gram
Row 41 - 50 = used 19 gram
Row 51 - 60 = used 34 gram
Row 61 - finished = used 41 gram

If you are interested to make this shawl, you can buy the pattern in here.
Or another option is to buy the kit.

GATHERING LEAVES KIT:
If you buy the kit, you'll get the PDF pattern and the yarn
The pattern will be sent to your email address (or to your Ravelry's library) and the yarn will be sent to your address (please make sure to update your shipping address in Paypal). Shipping cost is FREE! Please allow 10 - 20 days to reach your hand.
